1. A person can gain a lot of knowledge about history by watching the film, J. Edgar . I personally learned a lot of things I didn't know before. I didn't even know who J. Edgar Hoover was, but now I know that he had a huge impact on what the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI is today. I came into watching the movie with the idea that Hoover was a good person. Later on in the film I started to doubt myself on whether he was or not. He had many accomplishments in the FBI as the very first director, but he also did questionable and controversial things that seemed hypocritical to me. Hoover was the one who came up with fingerprinting criminals to be able to keep track of them and have their criminal background stored. This is very important because this is how we keep track of criminals today. Many people back then didn't understand this idea. J. Edgar Hoover ensued the "red raids", which solved who constructed the bombing of Mitchell Palmer's house, but...

Menu

J. Edgar Hoover's Menu Drinks: Coffee Coffee is a stereotypical drink that police officers drink in order to have energy for the day. This is also one of J. Edgar Hoover's favorite things to get at the Rib Room, which was a men-only bar that Hoover ate at daily. He even sat at the same table facing the door every time. Beer Beer is a drink that mostly men drink, and it was a favorite that people would get in the twentieth century.   Appetizers: Fried Potatoes Many people ate fried potatoes, which was the men's favorite. It was also considered a "business men's lunch." Oysters Oysters are a food that restaurants designed their menu around to become more manly. These remind me of FBI work because it is kind of secretive, you never know exactly what will be inside. Main Course: Steak Steak is a very masculine meal. It is a hearty meal that many people believe men eat more than women. It is also considered a "man-sized...

Exhibit

Image
Eight artifacts of J. Edgar Hoover FBI Badge This is an old FBI badge. This should be one of the artifacts because this little thing means so much to J. Edgar Hoover. He spent forty eight years in the FBI and it took up his whole life. Police Fingerprinting Kit One of Hoover's items should be a police fingerprinting kit. He's the one that really put this modern day activity to action. He wanted every single criminal to be caught. Masters of Deceit One of these items should definitely be J. Edgar Hoover's book that he wrote, Masters of Deceit , about his fear of communism. J. Edgar A copy of the movie, J. Edgar , because it accurately represents his life. Dillinger Arrest A copy of the newspaper from when John Dillinger was arrested. J. Edgar Hoover took a lot of pride in being in charge of this project. Secret Files J. Edgar had secret files on many people, including all of the presidents he worked for in order to keep them from firi...

Invitation

Image
The eight individuals that are invited to J. Edgar Hoover's dinner party are Theodore Roosevelt, Clyde Tolson, John F. Kennedy, Helen Gandy, Martin Luther King Jr., A. Mitchell Palmer, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christopher A. Wray. Theodore Roosevelt:  Teddy Roosevelt created the Federal Bureau of Investigation, because America didn't have a national police force. I think it would be a good idea for Roosevelt to be invited to the dinner party because he worked with Hoover. Clyde Tolson:  Clyde Tolson was Associate Director of the FBI and deputy of J. Edgar Hoover. I think it would be interesting to have Tolson at the dinner party because he and Hoover were best friends, and also had another secret relationship no one knew about. Hoover would want him to be there. John F. Kennedy:  John F. Kennedy was president and worked with Hoover. Hoover blackmailed him and his whole family, and had secret files on them. He should be invited to this party to discuss the files....

thinking about progress

I define progress as getting ahead of where you originally started. Dictionary.com  says that progress is, "a movement toward a goal or to a further stage." George Washington University  says that the Progressive Era was 1890-1920. The Library of Congress  says that, "The progressives, as they called themselves, worked to make American society a better and safer place in which to live. They tried to make big business more responsible through regulations of various kinds. They worked to clean up corrupt city governments, to improve working conditions in factories, and to better living conditions for those who lived in slum areas." They tried to fix female suffrage, working conditions, and industrialization. Essential goals were regulating child labor laws, making sure water and milk  were safe to drink. Good goals that could improve life but weren't extremely necessary was conserving natural resources, and creating awareness of literacy. A strange, and also proba...

future progess

From Smithsonian , "The next fifty years will witness an amazing increase in wealth and prosperity, with a continuous rise in the world standard of living. The threat of world overpopulation will disappear with ample space for everyone, thus removing one of the long existing causes for wars and revolutions." I think it is funny that people thought that all of the world's problems would magically go away. Fifty years ago people had a positive view for the future. It also says that most diseases should be cured, the average age will be around one hundred. A few predictions from BBC  that became true were mobile phones, pre-prepared meals, television, and the rising height of Americans. The most interesting predictions are from Mental Floss . People predicted that we would be walking on water with balloons holding us up, weather machines, and undersea ships, which is partly true today with submarines. The trends I saw were mostly technological advancement, which I don't ...
