History of the American Flag
The American flag is believed to be designed by Francis Hopkinson, and sewn by Betsy Ross. The name "Old Glory" was given to the flag by a sea captain named William Driver. This flag was said to have survived attempts of defacing during the Civil War. There have been several acts that have changed the design and shape of the flag, also adding stars and strips to evolve with the country throughout time. The 13 horizontal stripes represent the 13 colonies, with the red color symbolizing hardiness and valor, and the white symbolizing purity and innocence. The 50 stars represent each state, and the blue color symbolizes vigilance, perseverance, and justice. According to PBS , there are many "rules" regarding the flag that I didn't know about.
